As Educators we are a constantly overlooked and under-appreciated community.
But our role of providing children with a safe, familiar and fun service is instrumental to their growth and social maturity.
We work hard, often without recognition from parents, schools and governing bodies, so it is important we stick together and celebrate our own.
This 28th of July is OOSH Educators Day, and while many centres have been affected by the current spike in COVID-19 cases, there are a variety of ways we can continue to celebrate in both regular and COVID-safe settings:
Baking a cake or purchasing an assortment of pastries for your team to share is a simple way of showing your appreciation. The gesture will not go unnoticed and will likely lift the mood of your Educators who are perhaps doing it tough.
Positive verbal and written feedback on an individual’s performance can be a significant morale-booster. It has been shown to increase productivity and serves as a great intangible reward for your employees. Recognition does not have to come in the form of gifts, and it is important to remember positive reaffirmation can seriously galvanize your team.
Extra-curricular activities can strengthen social connections and workplace relations. They are also a fantastic reward and Educators would be greatly appreciative of the time spent away from the centre where they can let their hair down a little. For centres impacted by COVID-19, a safe alternative could be a Zoom night, or virtual get-together to talk about the challenges of the past year and reflect on how well the team has coped throughout.
Small monetary rewards such as gift cards are great tokens of appreciation. Often it is the little things that go a long way in terms of recognising hard work, and therefore a gift card to each member of your centre could be a significant gesture.
Organising an excursion (outside of centre hours) to a popular vacation care site, such as a ropes course, aqua park, or trampoline centre, can be a fun reward, especially if your whole team is excited to attend. Often, vacation care is exhausting and it can be difficult to enjoy excursions whilst keeping your eyes on your children. Taking your staff back to a popular excursion without the responsibility of supervising is an amazing way to celebrate this OOSH Educators Day. A COVID-safe alternative could be a virtual games night. There are plenty of party games online that bring your staff closer and help show how valued they are in your centre.
This OOSH Educators Day, make sure to recognise how hard your educators have worked this past year. It has been a struggle for all of us, so make sure they know how much they are valued in your centre.
