The Importance Of

STEAM Education

Craft activities are evolving. There is a heightened insistence to educate children through play and this is largely categorised through the introduction of STEAM. STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics, and growing research suggests that basing exercises and activities on these fundamental topics will lead to a myriad of benefits.

So here are three of what we at Craft Crate believe are the most significant benefits of STEAM for OOSH/OSHC children:

1. Greater Engagement In Learning

Any OOSH/OSHC educator knows that children develop different interests and hobbies and it is impossible to cater to all of these through one activity. However, STEAM provides hands-on opportunities to educate children about the events and workings of the world around them. Instead of learning via a textbook, children are far more likely to engage through the kinaesthetic practice of play. As OOSH/OSHC educators, we need to take what children learn at school and provide alternate avenues of exploration, and help them apply their knowledge to real situations. This can result in far greater engagement from children of all ages and abilities, as they seek to overcome these challenges and gain a greater understanding of their environment. This can be as simple as completing a puzzle, or as complex as coding a video game. Through engagement in STEAM at an early level, children will be able confidently apply themselves to various aspects of learning and life beyond.

2. Inclusivity

As aforementioned, the interests of children are varied, yet STEAM activities can also be adapted to suit each child. Irrespective of ability, culture, ethnicity, age or learning style, the notion of STEAM does not discriminate, in fact, it encourages. The elements of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics are such broad areas of learning, they attract a broad, all-inclusive audience. Through providing STEAM activities, children of all dispositions are given the opportunity to explore how the world works in a practical environment, leading to inspiration and a determination to create change. It is vital that we as educators cater to the needs of all children during play, through STEAM, as the inspiration one child may draw from an activity may lead to positive change in the way we all lead our lives.

3. STEAM Prepares Children For The future

In order to enact change in the future, children need to develop crucial skills now. Success is built upon the ability to overcome obstacles and STEAM provides opportunities for children to practice this notion of higher-order thinking. These include:

  • The ability to problem solve
  • Building resilience
  • Innovative thinking
  • Creative expression
  • The facilitation of critical thinking

The progression from childhood to adulthood presents new problems and challenges each day. By giving children the tools necessary to overcome these, STEAM stimulates personal growth and encourages the construction of a confident self-identity in each individual. Through turning children into problem solvers; through teaching resilience through failure; through thinking outside the box; STEAM activities are incredible motivators for children. It is our responsibility as educators to not let our children down, and present them with exercises and activities that will allow them to build a brighter future.
